Roy Masters

Many Christian leaders and organizations around the country were sent this letter in February 1992, at a time of intense controversy for the Foundation, the same kind of controversy that other Christian leaders are experiencing today. It is a statement of belief that will give you an insight into Roy’s faith.

An Open Letter to Churches

By Roy Masters

It is important for me to make clear that, because I was raised a Jew, I didn't come to Christ the way most Christians do—by upbringing. I realized the perfect beauty of Christianity by slow, often painful degrees (since I had to give over the faith of my fathers, Judaism). Therefore, in my personal journey to understand Christ, I often stumbled in my expression of what I was discovering. This is not a problem when a person is young and searching in the privacy of his heart. But I've been on the radio for over 30 years; I followed my path to being "born again" by trial and error in full view of the public. Thus, many "Roy Masters quotes" that are still mentioned to this day are misleading when it comes to discerning who I am and where my faith lies.

I have known for some time that there are Christians who reject my ministry because of certain elements, which they define as New Age. Although I imagine some of these reservations are legitimately based on real quotes taken out of context, others are based purely on false information about me and what I teach. Usually, the latter come from inaccurate, and often mean-spirited, media coverage of the Foundation of Human Understanding. I confess that even that name, which I chose so many years ago, has led to much confusion. I regret that, and all else that has interfered with my efforts to teach Christianity. I ask you to forgive my past errors. Allow me here to clarify my beliefs, and respond to some misunderstandings concerning my unorthodox methods.

Jesus
I believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the only begotten Son of God. I believe that Jesus is the Messiah foretold, born of the Virgin Mary, and that accepting His perfect truth is essential to salvation. God is perfectly revealed for us in the fullness of Christ, and so we have His clear example to follow. A person must love this Truth more than worldly life, for it is by faith that we are saved, and not acts.

As far as the concept of the Trinity is concerned, it is a mystery that I am eager to understand. I believe in one God, maker of Heaven and Earth. Therefore, I have trouble accepting the expression that "Jesus is God," since for me that means "Jesus is the Father," the source of all wisdom. I do believe that as God's Anointed—as the Father's Son in whom He was well pleased--judgment over men was given to Jesus, and He is deserving of worship

The Bible
I believe the Bible is absolutely the inspired word of God and should be taken literally—leaving reasonable room for honest disagreements that are based on translation differences and passages accepted as unclear. I think part of the reason Christians benefit from interdenominational contact is that we help each other to better know this Book of Life so essential for spreading the Good News. I welcome such help.
